The Presidents Cup announces record charitable amount of $5 million-plus from 2013 event

The PGA TOUR has announced that more than $5 million from The Presidents Cup 2013, a record-setting amount for this prestigious competition, will be distributed to charitable causes around the world as chosen by the 31 players, captains and captain’s assistants. Since the inception of The Presidents Cup in 1994, more than $32 million has been raised for charity from event proceeds. Over the past 20 years, The Presidents Cup has impacted more than 450 charities in 15 countries worldwide and 35 states in the U.S.
The Presidents Cup, a team match play competition featuring 24 of the world’s top golfers — 12 from the United States and 12 from around the world, excluding Europe — is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated between United States and international venues. In October, the U.S. Team retained the Cup from the Internationals in one of the most successful events to date, at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
The Presidents Cup is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prize money. Players are not paid for their participation; instead, each player, captain and captain’s assistant allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of his choice. This year, that portion was $150,000 per participant.
In addition to the money allocated by event participants, funding for Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The First Tee of Central Ohio was generated by, through and because of The Presidents Cup, resulting in more than $350,000 being returned to these Columbus-based charities. For example, $100,000 was generated for Nationwide Children’s Hospital through Opening Ceremony ticket sales, and Muirfield Village Golf Club donated $50,000 to the hospital on behalf of the event; $61,500 was generated for The First Tee of Central Ohio at a luncheon hosted during tournament week that featured Jack Nicklaus and PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem.
“Every Presidents Cup staged has been bigger and better than the one before, and The Presidents Cup 2013 was no exception,” said Finchem. “To cross the $5 million mark in charitable giving during the 10th playing of the event — and to have that money help the PGA TOUR reach the $2 billion milestone announced last month — certainly illustrates that fact.
“I’d like to thank the players, captains and captain’s assistants for not only putting on a great show in October, but also for reaching into their communities and out to charities around the world to put the funds generated by the event to good use. I’d like to thank everyone involved in The Presidents Cup 2013 — the many government entities in Dublin and Columbus who supported us from day one, the welcoming community and the great golf fans of the Midwest, Muirfield Village Golf Club and its members, the thousands of volunteers, our Global Partners Citi and Rolex, and our host, Jack Nicklaus — for their work in ensuring The Presidents Cup 2013 would make an incredible impact on countless lives. I’m certain it will be the standard by which all future Presidents Cups will be measured.”
“Those of us who love this great game are well aware of the incredible charitable giving that takes place within the game of golf,” Nicklaus said. “Golf not only raises more money for charity than all other sports combined, almost all of the money raised goes to worthwhile causes outside of the golf industry. The Presidents Cup is another wonderful example of that philanthropy and how the PGA TOUR tries to impact the communities where tournaments are played. The participating players from the 2013 Presidents Cup were able to support many charities important to them and their families. At the same time, the Central Ohio community, which embraced the event and turned out in overwhelming numbers, was able to benefit greatly from the money raised, especially local charities such as The First Tee of Central Ohio and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, two causes very important to Barbara and me.”
To follow is a history of charitable contributions from The Presidents Cup:
1994 – $750,000
1996 – $800,000

2003 – $2.8 million
2005 – $3.5 million
2007 – $4.2 million
2009 – $4.8 million
2011 – $4.75 million
2013 – $5.01 million

Led by iconic captains Fred Couples and Nick Price, the U.S. and International Teams provided yet another thrilling week of head-to-head competition in 2013. The U.S Team captured The Presidents Cup for the fifth consecutive time and eighth overall, led by a 4-1-0 performance by Tiger Woods. Woods clinched the victory for the U.S. Team for the third straight time, becoming the first player in event history to accomplish that feat. The U.S. holds an 8-1-1 record in The Presidents Cup overall. The International Team last won The Presidents Cup in 1998 when it was held outside the United States for the first time at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. A historic 17-17 tie came in 2003 when the event was held in South Africa.
The Presidents Cup 2015 will be held at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Songdo IBD, Incheon City, South Korea, October 6-11.
Citi and Rolex were the exclusive Global Partners of The Presidents Cup 2013.
