Howard Milstein Named PGA REACH Trustee

Philanthropist and golf entrepreneur Howard Milstein has been named a Trustee for PGA REACH, the 501(c)(3) foundation of the PGA of America.

Milstein, Chairman of 8AM Golf, has pledged $1 million to PGA REACH in honor of legendary PGA Member and five-time PGA Champion Jack Nicklaus. The gift is designed to inspire others to contribute to PGA REACH, as well as convey his belief in golf and the mission of PGA REACH.

The donation was announced at the 102nd PGA Annual Meeting in Indian Wells, California.
“Jack first introduced me to PGA REACH several years ago, and I have spent the past year working with PGA REACH and the other Trustees, learning about their important programs to help grow the game, impact youth, seed diversity and inclusion programs, and also help our Veterans become part of our community,” said Mr. Milstein who, as Chairman of 8AM Golf, is the publisher of GOLF Magazine and Executive Chairman of the Nicklaus Companies. “Through this commitment, I cannot think of a better way to honor my partner and friend. There is no one who better embodies the values and traditions of golf than Jack Nicklaus.”

The mission of PGA REACH is to positively impact the lives of youth, military, and diverse populations, by enabling access to PGA Professionals, PGA Sections and the game of golf.

“I deeply believe in the game of golf and its positive impact on participants of all ages,” Mr. Milstein added. “Through this donation and my involvement as a PGA REACH Trustee, I hope to give back to a community, and a game, that has given me so much.”
PGA Jr. League, the flagship youth program of PGA REACH, is a game-changing opportunity to bring family and friends together around fun team golf experiences. PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. The PGA WORKS Fellowship aspires to be the most valuable entry-level employment opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds to gain experience in all facets of the golf industry.
“We’re delighted that Howard Milstein has joined PGA REACH as our newest Trustee,” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh. “I have met with Howard and discussed how the PGA, Nicklaus and 8AM Golf can work together to create a real impact on the game and the people we serve. His donation is a beacon of light for others across the golf industry to emulate, and the impact it will have is enormous. PGA REACH is grateful for Howard’s generosity and commitment to the future of the game.”

Nicklaus Design Around the Globe
ELYRIA, Ohio – The Nicklaus Design team is adding to its illustrious record of honors and recognition, as industry experts are taking notice of its remarkable redesign work recently completed at Valley of the Eagles Golf Club in Ohio. In its upcoming December issue dedicated to the Best of 2018, GOLF Magazine has named Valley of the Eagles the “Best US Remodel” of the year, citing Nicklaus Design’s successful transformation of the course routing and imaginative resuscitation of the property.

“Pair the name ‘Nicklaus Design’ and ‘Ohio’ and the results are typically magical,” writes GOLF Magazine. “Valley of the Eagles is proof that the magic is alive and well… Most remarkable is how the Nicklaus team revived a spectacular Midwestern property with a clearing job that reveals nature’s wonders, amid a strategic routing that takes full advantage of those wonders. Steep valleys, sizable hills, exposed rock outcroppings and a ten-store shale cliff are in view, in play, or both… Call it Nicklaus magic.”

With a course slate just shy of 7,000 yards, GOLF Magazine made special note of a few holes including the 276-yard, par-3 fifth hole and the 569-yard, par-5 18th which now demands the golfer make two separate carries over water. The publication found the finished product, led by Nicklaus Design Associate David Savic, to be a “fun, compelling new spread,” leaving barely any remnants of its formerly tired layout of old.

“We’re thrilled to have this project recognized in such a meaningful way,” said Savic. “It’s a testament to the thoughtfulness and incredible teamwork we put into the property at Valley of the Eagles. We were taught by the best ever and are obsessive about the details at Nicklaus Design; to have an industry-leading publication capture the essence of those changes is equally humbling and rewarding.”

Auckland, New Zealand — Our field reporting this week starts in one of the most beautiful corners of the Earth as the Nicklaus Design team leads a redesign and renovation of historic Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club (RAGGC), scaling down its existing 36 holes to a stand-alone, featured 27. Led by Senior Design Associate, Chris Cochran, the cornerstone changes to the property are starting to take shape at RAGGC as the grow-in phase is well underway. Cochran and the Nicklaus Design team have been especially thoughtful in their approach with hopes to host a significant international tournament.

“Our approach to this project is critically inspired by the proven legacy design philosophies we learned from Jack,” said Cochran. “We’ve done a wonderful job recognizing and honoring his original intentions for the property, enhancing the design cadence and the state of play in a meaningful and memorable way.”
