Construction Begins On Sixth Nicklaus Course At Desert Mountain For A Total Of 108 Holes Of World-Renowned Golf

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Construction is underway on Outlaw, the sixth Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at The Desert Mountain Club. When completed, Outlaw will bring a total of 108 holes of golf to this premiere private residential and recreational community in North Scottsdale.

"The par 72 Outlaw promises to be equally spectacular as Desert Mountain's five existing signature courses in the Nicklaus collection, yet will offer another distinctly different golfing experience to our members," said Lyle Anderson, founder and co-owner of The Desert Mountain Club.

Located on a gentle 180-acre site, Outlaw will be walker-friendly and playable for all levels. "The course will play at approximately 7,100 yards from the back tees and offer dramatic, panoramic mountain views to the west as well as a layout featuring generous landing areas," Anderson said.

Outlaw is scheduled for completion in late 2003.

Plans call for a sixth clubhouse that will complement Outlaw's laid-back character. Situated on the southern portion of the property, the facility will offer views of the 10th and 18th fairways and is being designed to capture the relaxed ambience of a Southwestern cantina with a large outdoor patio.

Construction on the Outlaw Course started in early July following final approval by the Scottsdale City Council and the start of construction on the Irrigation Water Distribution System (IWDS), a privately-funded delivery line that will distribute water to several golf courses as well as recharge the Scottsdale/Carefree Basin acquifer.

While a sixth Nicklaus Signature layout complements an already remarkable cadre of courses available to Desert Mountain Club members, surrounding communities will also benefit, particularly from the construction of the IWDS which was funded in part by Desert Mountain Properties, developer of the project.

Now in its final phase of development, the 8,000-acre Desert Mountain sets the standard for private master-planned golf communities throughout the world. It is the only private club in the world that offers five (and soon to be six) Nicklaus Signature courses.

Currently, 1,200 homes have been built, are under construction or are in design review at Desert Mountain. Residents enjoy remarkable amenities including four clubhouses with a fifth facility, the Chiricahua Clubhouse, scheduled to open in October; a world-class fitness center; award-winning tennis courts; five restaurants offering a variety of dining experiences from gourmet to casual; youth programs and activities; and nine miles of hiking trails.

Desert Mountain developer Lyle Anderson and Jack Nicklaus share a long-term relationship that has resulted in an unparalleled golf experience for Desert Mountain Club members. Nestled in the foothills of the Continental Mountains with panoramic views of the Sonoran Desert and Valley below, the community provides a remarkable environment for world-class golf.

The community's first course, Renegade, opened in 1987. Playing at 7,515 yards, Renegade was designed so players of varying skills could enjoy the same course simultaneously.

Following Renegade's opening, the 7,048-yard Cochise course was completed in 1988. For 13 years it was the annual site of The Tradition golf tournament, the first "major" event of the Senior PGA Tour. Both the Renegade and Cochise courses have been chosen by Golf Digest to be among "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses".

The 7,414-yard Geronimo course, dubbed "the strong-looking course" by Nicklaus because of its dramatic terrain, opened for play in 1989. Offering a more traditional approach to golf with gently rolling fairways and ample grassy approaches, the Apache course opened in 1996 playing at 7,300 yards.

Desert Mountain's fifth course, Chiricahua, opened in 1999 and was immediately recognized by Golf Digest as one of "The Top New Private Courses in the U.S." Considered by many to be "the crown jewel" of the five Nicklaus designs, the 7,210-yard desert target course combines the architecture of the other four courses but changes in elevation more so than any other course at Desert Mountain. The highest elevation is at the third green topping at nearly 3,300 feet and the lowest is at the 11th green at 3,000 feet.

Desert Mountain is being developed by a partnership comprised of companies owned by Lyle Anderson and Crescent Real Estate Equities, Inc.
