With 9 holes ready to play, Jack Nicklaus makes a final visit to Golf Club at Harbor Shores

Jack Nicklaus made what might be his final visit to The Golf Club at Harbor Shores on Monday, June 29th. The golf legend toured all 18 holes of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, reviewed progress on the holes under construction, and made design tweaks to the final three lakefront holes.

The Benton Harbor, Mich., course will open its first nine holes for previewed play July 13. The full course will open in the spring of 2010.

The course is to be the primary amenity to the 530-acre mixed-use Harbor Shores community in Benton Harbor that is currently under construction. The resort community is to include marinas, commercial space, a hotel and conference center, indoor water park, parks, biking and walking trails, and almost 800 residential units.

"Now, it's not only a good golf course," Nicklaus said of what will be a course of about 7,040 yards playing to par 70 on 110 of the acres, "but it's beautiful. It plays nicely. It flows nicely. It's going to be something this area is going to be very proud of, and be very happy that it is here."

Because of an increase in golf course closures in Michigan, the course is one of very few to be in construction right now. Despite this it hopes to be a catalyst for Southwest Michigan, by creating jobs, attracting businesses and retaining residents.

Nicklaus has been involved in the design of 275 golf courses worldwide. The Harbor Shores course will be the first in Southwest Michigan and the fourth in the state
