Course Overview
Designed by Golf Course Architect Pete Dye with Jack Nicklaus serving as a design consultant, the par 71 Harbour Town Golf links first opened for play in time for the 1969 inaugural Heritage Golf Classic, now sponsored by MCI Communications and known as the MCI Heritage Classic.
Called "nothing short of a work of art," by Sports Illustrated magazine, Harbour Town holds many honors. Among those: A ranking in the top three American courses built since 1962, by the American Society of Golf Course Architects and Golf Magazine's inclusion in the top 30 courses in the world.
Measuring 6,912 yards from the Heritage tees with a slope of 136, Harbour Town is not considered long by today's standards. Players, however, should not be deceived by numbers alone. The course has unique character, reminiscent of some of the old Scottish course which require perfectly positioned shots. Sculpted from 300 acres of live oaks, pines and magnolias, Harbour Town's towering trees have tormented many golfers over the years. The golfer who hits his drive to the wrong side of the fairway will find himself planning approaches over and around the trees, over and over again.
