Course Overview
Imagine a getaway amidst the paradise of California's premier wine country. A retreat set within 675 acres of rolling hillsides, majestic live oaks, sweeping meadows of native grasses, and an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. A place that offers miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as close proximity to world-class wineries and restaurants. This is Mayacama, a private club in the heart of Sonoma.
At Mayacama, golfers won't find carts, yardage signs or any monuments at all on the course - the idea is a return to pure golf. The remarkable site is graced with a series of ridges, each separated by finger-like valleys, each valley laced with streams and wetlands. Covered with oaks, madrone and manzanita, this unspoiled land is soaked in deep shade in the morning and glows in the golden light of the late afternoon. With continuously undulating terrain, hills and meadows, it offers the ideal conditions for what Nicklaus calls a modern classic.
Designed for walking, Mayacama's classic layout rewards strategic play and, while not praising mediocre shots, won't unfairly penalize them either. Definitely a shot maker's course, players at every skill level will appreciate the ability to challenge it differently on any given day.
Measuring 6,761 yards from the back tees, the par 72 championship layout is entirely sand-capped making its meticulously groomed, tournament-conditioned turf playable year round. Another striking feature is Mayacama's immediate maturity. The combination of century-old oaks, judicious planning that produced minimal land disturbance and complete fairway sodding has created a course with the maturity of one constructed 50 years ago.
Bear Facts
"Mayacama is a very exciting golf course. First of all, you start with a great piece of property, one that allowed us the opportunity to set a golf course in there, naturally, to create a wonderful golf experience. The whole experience is secluded and private. The club's location and its surrounds combine to make it very private and unique. If you weren't from there, you'd never know there was a golf course there." - Jack Nicklaus
