Kent State captures Jack Nicklaus Invitational title

Golden Flashes overcome eight-shot deficit to best field that included six top-30 teams

Kent State erased an eight-shot deficit in the final round to win the third annual Jack Nicklaus Invitational in October at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. With the event shortened to 36 holes because of frost delays, the Golden Flashes carded a 29-over 605 (303-302). That beat out 10 other teams in a field Golfweek ranked among the strongest in the nation—one that included six teams ranked in the top 30—while facing the same pin placements as the world-class field in the PGA Tour’s annual Memorial Tournament face.  The 2012 tournament was the second straight held at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

"Really proud of the way our guys performed against a top-flight field and on a challenging golf course," said Kent State’s Director of Golf/Head Coach Herb Page.  "This was a team effort all the way around.”

No. 23 Oklahoma State and No. 21 Vanderbilt tied for second in the tournament, with total scores of 608. The eight other collegiate teams to compete in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational were Kentucky, UCF, Brigham Young, Arkansas, Purdue, San Diego, UNLV and Nicklaus’ alma mater, Ohio State.

University of Central Florida’s Greg Eason took home the individual title, shooting 4-under 140 (70-70) to finish six shots ahead of UNLV’s AJ McInerney and Purdue’s Adam Schenk.

Kent State junior Taylor Pendrith led the Golden Flashes with a fourth-place finish, his second top-five in four events this season.
