What to look for in a golf course architect
Designer's qualification should be documented
The architect or golf course designer should have experience and knowledge in all aspects of course design and should have successfully completed the contruction and development of many courses, hopefully with terrain similar to yours. The architect should have a proven method and approach to interacting with you, the developer, to derive the best possible design that fits your vision of the project. While not required, membership in the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects would be a testimony to being a reputable designer.[ more ]
Designer should be able to produce a cost effective design
The architect or designer should be able to distill the developer's requirements and produce a cost-effective design that meets the goals of the project. The architect should possess enough supporting resources to be able to effectively and efficiently execute a project of similar size, whether he is located locally or in a different country.[ more ]
Designer should be able to enhance real estate value
Most golf courses serve as the centerpiece or chief amenity of a resdential development, so the architect should have a proven track record that his designs have added value to the overall project, be it in real estate lot value, velocity of sales, or enhanced membership sales.[ more ]

The architect or design firm should be engaged well before the master plan is done. A capable architect will be invaluable in providing consultation on land-planning and navigating through the pre-construction process. The architect should provide consultation and support throughout the construction process. After the course's opening, the design firm should be an invaluable resource on the proper operations and maintenance of the golf course.
