Jack Nicklaus plays his
inaugural round at
Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, California
INDIAN WELLS (Calif.) - Jack Nicklaus,
the golf legend and the world's preeminent course
designer, christened his two Signature Golf Courses
at Toscana Country Club on May 1 with a grand
opening celebration for Members, media and guests.
The two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses are
the first he has done in the California desert
in almost 20 years.
For his inaugural round at Toscana,
Nicklaus used a persimmon wood driver--a replica
of the club he used to win several of his record
18 professional major championships--for a ceremonial
shot at the first tee. He then played the front
nine of his Signature North Course and the front
nine of his Signature South Course, explaining
to the gallery of Toscana Country Club Members,
guests and media the vision and philosophy behind
the design of each hole.
"The Toscana property has wonderful
movement, flow and changes in the elevation, as
well as breathtaking views of the surrounding
mountains," Nicklaus said, "especially the sixth
hole on the South Course since it directly faces
Eisenhower Mountain. We were able to create two
very distinctively challenging yet playable courses
because we were able to start with raw land without
trees or any physical restraints.''
Framed by the breathtaking Santa
Rosa Mountains, the South Course opened in December
2004. The par-72, 7,349-yard Jack Nicklaus Signature
Course is designed to challenge and reward players
of every level, and to provide opportunities to
enjoy and excel at their games. The scenic South
Course features lush turf and landscaping, dramatic
bunkering and greens that are traditional in size.
By contrast, the par-72, 7,186-yard Jack Nicklaus
Signature North Course is a desert-themed course
that features undulating fairways surrounded by
arroyos and natural washes and greens that are
smaller with dramatic breaks.
The first nine holes of the North
Course opened in December 2005 while the second
nine is scheduled to begin construction in 2007.
Both Toscana courses have six sets of tees catering
to all handicaps, and the dramatic elevation changes
surrounded by almost 360-degrees of spectacular
mountain vistas create a memorable golf experience.
"We are thrilled with the two Jack
Nicklaus Signature Courses," said William Bone,
Chief Executive Officer at Toscana Country Club.
"Jack personally visited the site nine times during
the design and construction process. His hands-on
approach and commitment to his design philosophy
has resulted in two spectacular golf courses for
our Members."
