Jack Nicklaus featured in new Charlie Menchem book: “Who’s That With Charlie: Lessons Learned and Friends I’ve Made Along the Way”

In “Who’s That With Charlie: Lessons Learned and Friends I’ve Made Along the Way,” Charlie Mechem, best known for his role as commissioner of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), shares his experiences with readers on a journey through the magical worlds of business and sports. Like his friend Jack Nicklaus, Mechem hails from Central Ohio. Their common roots, combined with their shared passions for golf and business, led Nicklaus and Mechem to cross paths on many occasions and develop a lasting friendship along the way.
“Who’s That With Charlie” chronicles Mechem’s interactions with leaders across the country and how he made friends and learned lessons he will never forget. Nicklaus is one of the book’s central figures. In “Who’s That With Charlie,” Mechem details fond memories and life lessons that the former Chairman and CEO of Taft Broadcasting gleaned alongside the Golden Bear. He also provides insight into the relationship between Nicklaus and their friend Arnold Palmer. In his book, Mechem writes:

“Let me tell you my favorite story that illustrates the difference between Arnie and Jack.  When I was working with Arnie, I continued to maintain a close relationship with Jack, and one day went to his office in North Palm Beach to discuss a matter.  The first thing Jack asked was, ‘How is Arnie?’  I said he was fine, and then Jack asked, ‘Does he really play golf every day?’  I replied that he did.  Jack just shook his head.  When I got back to my Bay Hill office the next day and told Arnie I had spent some time with Jack, his first question was, ‘How is Jack?’  I said that he seemed to be doing fine.  Then Arnie, obviously alluding to the fact that Jack was not playing a lot of golf, said, ‘What in the world does he do all day?’  Understand that neither was being critical of the other.  They simply had totally different perspectives!”

From humble beginnings, Mechem’s earnest efforts endeared him to thousands, from line workers to luminaries in business, entertainment, and sports.  Legendary for his insight into human kindness, sharp insight, and lofty endeavors, readers will get a chance to relive memorable moments in LPGA history as well as revisit local lore on a grand scale.
In addition to serving as commissioner of the LPGA and Chairman and CEO of Taft Broadcasting, the distinguished Mechem was Chairman of Cincinnati Bell, and Convergys, and a partner in the law firm of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister. Since retiring from his post at the LPGA, he has worked as a partner with Arnold Palmer.
The 272-page, hardcover book retails for $23.95. To learn more about Mechem or his book, visit www.Facebook.com/WhosThatWithCharlie.
