American Lake Veterans Golf Course
Jack Nicklaus Catch sneak
preview of new
national PSA

As part of ESPN's coverage dedicated to Veteran's Day, the network's critically acclaimed Outside the Lines took a few moments this week to tell the story of American Lake Veterans Golf Course and the support it is getting from Jack Nicklaus. American Lake, located near Tacoma, Wash., is the first course designed for disabled veterans and is operated totally by volunteers, most of whom are veterans from World War II to the wars in Irag and Afghanistan. The Golden Bear has donated his design services and time to add a second nine holes and re-design the existing nine.

videosThe feature, called "Fairway to Recovery," was produced by ESPN's talented veteran Jennifer Chafitz and narrated by Chris Connelly. To tell the story of American Lake, Chafitz sat down with Jack in the Nicklaus Design studio in North Palm Beach, Fla., and then visited the course, where she interviewed 92-year-old WWII veteran Red Burton, as well as Iraq war veteran Danny Dudek, and Vietnam vets Elmer Stevens and Jim Martinson, who lost both his legs in 1968 and has gone on to win the Boston Marathon, capture gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, and last year became the oldest athlete in the history of Winter X Games.

Nicklaus Connect
to launch in 2011
NicklausConnect.com, built like a
social networking site, to unite family of
Nicklaus Design clubs nationwide
Jack Nicklaus has always approached the business of golf course design with a passion and thinks of every Nicklaus Design course as part of his extended family. In following that philosophy, the Nicklaus Companies embarked on an initiative in 2010 to reach out to all Nicklaus Design courses around the world, and whenever possible, offer assistance to the operators of the golf club. To ease the communication and foster the interaction between Nicklaus and each golf club, Nicklaus Companies developed the idea to apply the concept of social media to the building of an online community where staff at each Nicklaus Design course can make connections to staff at other Nicklaus Design courses, and thus expand their professional network. Whether it is sharing knowledge and expertise, learning industry best practices, or tapping into the knowledge base of Nicklaus Design, this online community will help provide the answers. To make the idea a reality, Nicklaus Companies selected the Targeted Group to develop and implement this network.
