Dramatic changes enhance
Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course
Bigger is not always better. Especially when location, namely a pair of superlative settings on the Sea of Cortes, trumps size.

With seven holes fronting the turquoise-blue sea, the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol is the course that placed Los Cabos, the 20-mile corridor at the tip of Mexico's Baja California Sur, squarely on the global golf map when it debuted in 1994.

Among the top-ranked international venues on designer Jack Nicklaus' resume, the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol is revered as one of the finest courses in Latin America. Like other layouts built in the 1990s and earlier, the club has had to respond to equipment advances by subtly altering the strategy on a number of holes.

While greens have been reshaped and bunkers repositioned by Nicklaus over the years, his revision of the layout's back-to-back par 3s at Holes 6 and 7, and overhaul of the par-4 fifth hole represent a complete departure from previous modifications.

The Concession Golf Club
hosts clubs in Ryder Cup-
inspired Concession Cup
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Concession Golf Club hosted and won the first Concession Cup Dec. 2-4. The competition pitted a team from The Concession against teams from five elite private golf clubs from the Philadelphia area in a tournament designed to emulate the traditions, camaraderie and competition of the Ryder Cup matches, upon which The Concession Golf Club was inspired and built.

The Concession, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with Tony Jacklin, was conceived in commemoration of the 1969 Ryder Cup singles match between the two, where Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin on the final hole. That now-legendary gesture of sportsmanship, known as "the concession," rendered the two teams in a 17-17 tie. The United States retained the Ryder Cup, having won it in 1967. That moment marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two men and inspired one of America's great golf clubs.

Jack Nicklaus Golf Center instructors
from Japan coming to US for training

Five members of the staff of instructors at the Nicklaus Golf Center in Ohmori, Japan, spent a week in November at the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf in Las Vegas receiving training from Mike Malaska, worldwide director of instruction for Nicklaus Academies. The training is part of Nicklaus Academies' ongoing support program to train and re-certify its professional staff on a regular basis.

Todd Baker, lead instructor at Ohmori and coach of rising Japanese star Shunsuke Sonada, the 2010 Japan Golf Tour's Rookie of the Year, said, "It is a great opportunity to come to the US and spend time with Mike and the staff in Las Vegas to discuss everything from the basics of instruction to the latest concepts being used at the highest level of competition. The fact that Mike taught in Japan for three years allows him to relate to our students and how we can better address their needs. The training is invaluable for our staff-and the chance to play golf in the desert is always a treat."
