Thanks to Jack’s backing
and support of its top players, golf is one of two sports IOC Executive Board recommends for inclusion in 2016 Olympic Games; Final vote is Oct. 9
Golf’s collective voice had good reason to shout Thursday.
A campaign energized by the game’s leading organizations and players, including its greatest player ever, Jack Nicklaus, has moved golf one step closer to being reinstated as an Olympic sport, following the International Olympic Committee Executive Board’s recommendation Thursday in Berlin, Germany, to add golf and rugby sevens to the 2016 Olympic Programme.
The IOC’s final vote on whether to add as many as two sports will take place on October 9 at the 121st IOC session in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the membership of the IOC is not obliged to follow the Executive Board’s recommendation, the Board’s decision is based on an extensive review process of seven candidate sports that has included formal presentations, the submission of a Detailed Questionnaire and responses to questions raised by both the IOC Programme Commission and the IOC Executive Board. The IOC Executive Board announced its decision today following a meeting in Berlin.
Nicklaus, a Global Ambassador for golf’s campaign, is traveling this week through Asia, and was informed of the news Thursday night during a stop, ironically, in Beijing, China—site of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

2011 Senior PGA and
2014 PGA Championship
heading to Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The PGA of America is looking to bring more drama back to Valhalla.
The 2014 PGA Championship and 2011 Senior PGA were recently awarded to the Jack Nicklaus-designed layout. The decision comes less than a year after the course hosted the 2008 Ryder Cup in which the U.S. ended a nine-year drought by beating Europe without Tiger Woods, who was rehabbing a knee injury.
PGA of America president Jim Remy said the Ryder Cup showcased why the venue has become so attractive to the PGA.
"They said you can't create history, can't create a major site," he said. "I think we've probably proven that wrong. By continually working hard, making it a challenge but a fair challenge to the greatest players in the world, the reputation for the facility has really grown."
