Led by No. 1 Pronghorn and No. 2 Palmetto Bluff, 26 communities with Nicklaus Design golf courses highlight Travel + Leisure Golf’s annual list of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities”
Driving home the importance of how the golf experience ties to residential communities, Travel + Leisure Golf recently released their annual list of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities,” and more than a quarter of the list included communities at which Nicklaus Design has been involved in at least one of the centerpiece golf courses.
Of the 26 communities on T+L Golf’s list that feature one or more Nicklaus Design courses, five of the top six and seven of the top 10 were anchored by a Jack Nicklaus-designed course.
Making its way from No. 8 on the 2008 list to the top spot this year was The Club at Pronghorn, a private golf community on 640 acres of high-desert terrain outside Bend, Oregon. Pronghorn is home to the 7,381-yard, par-72, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, which has already earned Top-100 status from several national publications. The Golden Bear’s design has been masterfully intertwined with ancient lava rock ridges and outcroppings, and offers spectacular panoramic vistas of nine snow-capped mountain peaks.
Celebrating the natural landscape and displaying beautiful transitions and clean lines, as well as environmentally friendly grasses that require less water, underground trash receptacles, and a state-of-the-art drainage system, the Nicklaus course provides a minimalist experience with emphasis on the golf game itself.
Palmetto Bluff, located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry and anchored by May River, the Nicklaus Signature Course which brushes the banks of the river for which it is named, held on to its No. 2 spot from 2008.
Holding on to the fourth spot was Mayacama in Santa Rosa, Calif., followed by The Cliffs Communities, the acclaimed developments that span the borders of North and South Carolina. The Cliffs, which feature two Nicklaus Signature Courses, moved up two spots from its 2008 ranking of No. 7 to round out 2009’s top five of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities.”
Kiawah Island in South Carolina, and The Greenbrier Sporting Club came in at Nos. 6 and 9, respectively, while Reynolds Plantation, with its Nicklaus-designed Great Waters course, rounded out the Top 10 for Nicklaus Design at No. 10.
