Terlato and Nicklaus families launch Jack Nicklaus Wines

Terlato Wines and golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his family announced their partnership on Jack Nicklaus Wines, a new line of handcrafted, limited-production wines from California’s famed Napa Valley. In a nod to golf history and tradition, the first bottles of the inaugural vintage—the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2007 Private Reserve—were uncorked by Nicklaus at a private event last week at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in Scotland, globally recognized as the birthplace of golf.

The wines’ public debut will be held at the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Memorial Tournament, being played June 3-6 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The Nicklaus and Terlato families share a lifelong pursuit of excellence and achievement in their respective fields—as well as a deep appreciation for the land, whether creating memorable golf courses from stunning terrain, or growing grapes in exceptional vineyard soils. When Nicklaus, a long-time wine collector, sought to create a signature wine, he and his family looked for a partner who held high standards consistent with their own.

Nicklaus and his sons, Jack II and Gary, visited the Terlato-owned vineyards in California to meet with TWI Chairman and Founder Anthony Terlato and his sons, Bill and John. They toured the Terlato-owned Chimney Rock and Rutherford Hill wineries, and what emerged from two extraordinary days in Napa Valley was a friendship and two fabulous new wines.

India
Nicklaus designates Evolution Golf
as design representatives in burgeoning market of India

Responding to demand to grow the game in one of the globe’s burgeoning golf markets, Nicklaus Design, the world’s leading course design firm, has appointed Evolution Golf as its design representatives for India. Led by Shivas Nath, a former player turned golf entrepreneur, Evolution Golf will also work to grow the Nicklaus brand and business throughout the world’s second-most populous nation.

Nicklaus Design opened its first course in India in 1998, with the unveiling of Classic Golf Resort in New Delhi, which has played host to a number of Asian Tour and Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) events. Currently, Nicklaus Design has projects under development in Ahmedabad and Ludhiana, with a number of prospects spread across India, as Nicklaus Design continues to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific Region. Estimates have indicated there are approximately 500,000 golfers among India’s 1.17 billion people, and the number is forecasted to grow at an annual rate of up to 30 percent for the next few years. In addition, more than 30 percent of the country’s estimated 250 courses have opened in the last five years. Through this collaborative effort with Evolution Golf and Nath, Nicklaus Design is positioning itself as the industry leader in India and will help guide quality golf development throughout the country.

“We our proud of our success in recent years throughout Asia,” said Paul Stringer, Executive Vice President for Nicklaus Design. “But as part of Jack Nicklaus’ desire to continue to grow the game worldwide and our initiative to enhance our on-the-ground personnel and representatives in key markets such as China, Korea and now India, we felt it was important to bring in an experienced and forward-thinking person like Shivas Nath. We feel it is not only important to grow the game by designing quality facilities, but there is a responsibility to develop the game at the junior level. We believe strongly in producing good citizens and not just good golfers, and that begins at the junior level. Shivas has a great passion and vision for junior golf in his home country.”

Jack Nicklaus
the Memorial Tournament and Nationwide Children’s Hospital
welcome Nicklaus Children’s
Health Care Foundation as Partner

Tournament officials announced today an alliance among the Memorial Tournament, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation to create opportunities for funding and awareness. The new alliance will establish Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation as a lead charity of the Memorial Tournament and supporter of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This relationship will enable the Memorial to increase its long-standing support and promotion of Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Memorial Tournament NICU, while combining the strengths of three very powerful organizations, all for the benefit of Central Ohio pediatric care.

Health CareDriven by a passion to come to the aid of all those impacted by childhood illnesses, the Nicklaus family formed its Foundation almost five years ago. The mission of the Foundation was and remains simple yet powerful: To support programs and activities that advance and enhance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of childhood diseases and disorders. In its relatively young history, the Foundation has already raised more than $14 million for support of pediatric health care programs in a five-county area of South Florida. But the goal of the Nicklaus family has been to broaden the reach of the Foundation’s helping hand.

Venue becomes the first to
host The Presidents Cup,
Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup

PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and four-time U.S. Presidents Cup Team Captain Jack Nicklaus announced today that Muirfield Village Golf Club will host The Presidents Cup in 2013, when the biennial competition returns to the United States. The 2013 Presidents Cup will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2013.

Muirfield Village Golf Club becomes the third golf course in the United States to host the prestigious match-play competition, joining Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, Va., (1994, 1996, 2000), and Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, Calif., (2009). The venue, where the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley has been held annually since 1976, has also hosted several national championships and international team competitions including the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur, 1987 Ryder Cup, 1992 U.S. Amateur and the 1998 Solheim Cup.

“I’d like to congratulate and thank Jack Nicklaus for his partnership in bringing The Presidents Cup to Muirfield Village Golf Club in 2013,” said Tim Finchem. “The history of this golf course is well documented, as is Jack’s commitment to The Presidents Cup, which he served as U.S. Team Captain in 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Jack created Muirfield Village to illustrate his passion for tournament golf and challenge the world’s best players. The selection of Muirfield Village as the site of the next Presidents Cup in the United States is confirmation of what the golf club and Jack Nicklaus has meant to the history of our sport.”

Cap Cana Leads Five Nicklaus Designs in
Golfweek's "Best Tour Courses You Can Play"

Cap CanaShortly after the third Cap Cana Championship—an immediate hit on the Champions Tour—the Punta Espada Golf Course was ranked No. 8 in Golfweek’s recent list of the “Best Tour Courses You Can Play.” It is the third such ranking of the best public-access courses played on the PGA, Champions, Nationwide and LPGA tours in 2009-2010. The list is a celebration of one of golf’s grandest idiosyncrasies: the fact that amateurs can test their games on the same courses and holes where the game’s greatest players have made history.

Punta Espada, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that plays along the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, was named the No. 1 course in Golfweek's 2009 and 2010 ranking of the Best Caribbean Courses. It led a fivesome of Nicklaus Design courses to make the Best Courses on Tour list, followed at No. 9 by Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C., which represents Jack’s first design effort and has hosted a PGA Tour event each year since it opened in 1969. At No. 17 was the Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz., and at No. 24 was the Champion Course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., the host venue for The Honda Classic. Rounding out the Nicklaus Design courses on Golfweek's list was Four Seasons Hualalai in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
