Jack Nicklaus, through his global reach in design and development, as well as the worldwide marketing and licensing of his golf and lifestyle brand, is atop Golf Inc. magazine’s coveted list of the “Most Powerful People in Golf” for a record-extending sixth consecutive year. The Golden Bear is the only golf industry figure who has ever been named to the No. 1 spot for more than three years.
Announced this week, Nicklaus tops the 2009 worldwide list of 35 individuals who were selected by a panel of editors for their ability to influence and impact the business of golf, be it the development of courses and communities, the operation of courses, the equipment used by golfers, or the rules and regulations of the game. The list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka.
Golf Inc. wrote that while the Golden Bear’s reign at No. 1 is unprecedented, “the fact is that he keeps adding to his legend, at the design table and in the business world. Despite a worldwide course development slowdown, Nicklaus’s design firm has over 40 courses in development around the globe… And he remains perhaps golf’s most respected spokesperson on a wide range of issues.”
Nicklaus Design has 40 courses under construction, and projects signed and under development in 45 countries, many of which are in countries Nicklaus Design has never been involved before, thus furthering Jack’s mission to introduce and grow the game worldwide. Among those key global regions is Asia, where Nicklaus Design has 10 courses under construction, including five in China, three in Korea and courses in Cambodia and India. The firm also has another 29 signed and active projects spread throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Right
at home in Best New: Nicklaus Design leads all
firms with five courses
While the economy has turned the eyes of the golf world, well, on the world outside
of the United States, Nicklaus Design continues to remind everyone that there
is great golf right here at home. Nicklaus led all designers and design firms
with five courses in Golfweek’s 2009 ranking of the 40 “Best
New Courses” in the U.S.
Jack Nicklaus had three of his four make the top 11, led by Creighton
Farms, the exclusive residential golf community located in the rolling
hills of Virginia’s prestigious Loudoun County and situated just 30 miles
west of Washington, D.C. The centerpiece of this spectacular gated community
owned by Southworth Development, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course was
not only recognized by Golfweek, but was named one of the “Best
New Courses” by Golf Digest and Travel + Leisure Golf—one
of only two private courses in the world to be recognized by all three publications
in 2008.
Another course to sweep the best-new rankings of almost every major golf publication
was The
Chase at the PGA Golf Club Coyote Springs, located just north of
Las Vegas. The Chase was No. 10 in Golfweek’s ranking, while also
being recognized by Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine, LINKS Magazine and Travel
+ Leisure Golf. In addition, Coyote Springs was lauded in the recent GolfWorld
Readers’ Choice Awards with honors in six different categories (top
5 in five of those), including No. 1 in the U.S. for “Course Conditions” and “Speed
of Play.”

Cap
Cana, Cougar Canyon roar again in rankings
Whether tucked away on the eastern coastline of the Dominican
Republic or tucked away in the tiny Southern Colorado town of Trinidad, Cap
Cana and Cougar
Canyon Golf Links continue to make big names for themselves.
For the second year in a row, the Punta
Espada course at Cap Cana topped Golfweek’s ranking
of the “Best Courses of the Caribbean and Mexico”—a 2010 list
of 50 that featured nine Nicklaus courses, including three in the top eight and
seven in the top 20. Meanwhile, Cougar Canyon was named to Golfweek’s ranking
of the 100 “Best Resort Courses”—the sixth national award the
Nicklaus Design course has received since opening in late 2007.
Cougar Canyon, at No. 14, was among 14 Nicklaus Design courses recognized by
the magazine’s ranking of the top resorts in the U.S. Of the Nicklaus entries,
six were new to the list—a number that topped all designers.
Within the golf-rich state of Colorado, Cougar Canyon was the only course that
made the top 50 and only one Colorado layout other made the top 100. Cougar Canyon
was also the newest course listed in the top 20.
“Receiving
so much national recognition in such a short period of time is a testament to
the quality of the design and the superb condition and presentation of the course,” said
Cougar Canyon Director of Golf Operations Matt Reams.
In addition, Cougar Canyon was one of four Nicklaus Design
courses to take the No. 1 spot in their respective state in Golfweek’s state-by-state
ranking of the top public-access courses. Nicklaus Design had 23 courses make
the list, including 12 in the top five of their states. The other courses to
earn top billing were Bayside
Resort (Delaware), Old
Works (Montana), and Ross
Creek Landing (Tennessee).
In the ranking of the Best Courses of the Caribbean and Mexico,
and following No. 1 Punta Espada, were eight Mexican gems by Nicklaus, who has
been voted the country’s top designer for four straight years by BEST’s
Golf Guides to Meixico. At No. 6 was Vista
Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, followed at No. 8 by the Ocean
Course at Cabo del Sol in Los Cabos. Both courses at the Four
Seasons Punta Mita, north of Vallarta, made the top 20, with Pacifico at
No. 12 and Bahia at
No. 20. Bahia is celebrating its official opening on Monday, Nov. 16, with an
appearance by the Golden Bear. At No. 14 is Eldorado
Golf & Beach Club in San Jose del Cabo, followed at by its neighbors, Puerto
Los Cabos (No. 16) and Palmilla (No.
23). Rounding out the Nicklaus entries was No. 28 Moon
Spa & Golf Club in Cancun.

Nicklaus
Design takes
top course honors in
China, Korea, Taipei
and Indonesia
For the second straight year and the third time in seven years, the readers of Asian Golf Monthly magazine have named Nicklaus Design as “Golf Course Architect of the Year in Asia Pacific.” The honor was announced last week on the closing eve of the 2009 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and capped a night during which Jack Nicklaus was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award before a record number of close to 500 delegates from around the world.
As Asia is being celebrated as golf’s new frontier and arguably the most important player in the game’s future, Nicklaus Design is being lauded for its impact on golf’s past, present and future there. The gala not only recognized the top course architect, but honored the top courses in different countries and regions throughout Asia. Among the winners was the 1997 Jack Nicklaus design of the Mountain Course at Spring City Resort in Kunming, which repeated as Best Golf Course in China. Nicklaus Design’s Shadow Creek, which opened just last year in Beijing and has already received acclaim not only for its design but impeccable playing conditions, was named second runner-up.
For the second year in a row and just two years after opening, The Ocean Course at Sky 72 Golf Club was named Best Golf Course in Korea. Located in Incheon, this Nicklaus Design layout, which played host last week to the LPGA’s Hana Bank • KOLON Championship, was also voted No. 4 on the list of the Best Courses in the Asia Pacific Region.
The Best Course in Chinese Taipei went to Miramar Linkou Golf & Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that opened in 1994. The top honor in Indonesia went to Bumi Serpong Damai Course at Damai Indah Golf & Country Club in Tangerang. This 1992 design by Jack was also named No. 5 on the list of the Best Championship Courses in Asia Pacific.
“Nicklaus Design is pleased and honored to win Asia’s Golf Course Architect of the Year, and we want to thank everyone associated with Asian Golf Monthly, not the least of which are the readers, for recognizing us again,” said Paul Stringer, Executive Vice President for Nicklaus Design. “Having the support and confidence of the golfers in Asia is a tribute to Jack Nicklaus and to our designers in Asia. We are also very proud that countries that are growing the game the fastest, particularly Korea and China, have recognized Nicklaus Design by applauding our work in their respective countries.
