Nicklaus Design Around the Globe

From our backyard in Florida to the USA’s epicenter, New York City,
Nicklaus Design Creates Public Golf for Players of all Skill Levels
As the next two majors head to public golf courses, we focus this month’s edition of Nicklaus News on three of the over 130 daily fee Nicklaus golf courses around the country.

North Palm Beach Country Club (Florida)

A full year has enabled Nicklaus Design to successfully upgrade our local municipal golf course, North Palm Beach Country Club. Located in Florida’s golf hub, NPBCC is only a few miles from the headquarters of the Nicklaus Companies, PGA of America, the National Golf Foundation and the Nicklaus Family residence. With the addition of new forward tee boxes, restoring the bunkers to their original design and re-grassing the entire golf course, the State’s top municipal course is the perfect venue for those learning the game as well as a challenging test for those low-handicap golfers.

The layout rests atop a natural sand dune, the Seminole Ridge, and offers elevation changes rarely found in South Florida. In addition to the unique topography, several holes wind along the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway. Nicklaus Design first became involved in 2006 when Founder, Jack Nicklaus, redesigned the course for just $1; a tribute to the Village of North Palm Beach where the Nicklaus family has lived for decades and generations.

Having spent years abroad perfecting his craft at a variety of Nicklaus projects, Nicklaus Designer Chad Goetz enjoyed the rare opportunity to directly impact a course in his hometown. Goetz is a member of the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects, and this work strikes close to his heart due to the direct impact on his home community:

“Knowing that my neighbors and their children can enjoy and learn the game on a course I worked on makes me really proud,” commented Goetz. “In addition to NPBCC being open to the public, the course is unique and a ton of fun to play. Combined with a spectacular new clubhouse, NPBCC is one of the finest public golf facilities in the Palm Beaches, if not all of Florida.”

Harbour Town Golf Links (South Carolina)

Earlier this month, one of Nicklaus Design’s resort courses, Harbour Town Golf Links, welcomed the world’s top players to one of the PGA TOUR’s most popular stops, The RBC Heritage. This course is significant to the history of Nicklaus Design as it started the Nicklaus portfolio of courses that recently reached 423 and is still growing!

At the invitation of famed designer, Pete Dye, our Founder Jack Nicklaus began a golf course collaboration that resulted in one of the country’s top-ranked courses. Harbour Town is set up to accommodate a variety of players by offering tees at 5,000 yards and extending back to over 7,000 yards. A picturesque property in the charming Low Country enabled Nicklaus and Dye to sculpt a layout from 300 acres of live oaks, pines, magnolias, marshes and rivers. Staying true to the Nicklaus Design philosophy, the golfer who hits it straight and on the correct side of the fairway will be rewarded with the best angles into these masterfully sculpted greens.

Harbour Town Golf Links hosted its 51st PGA TOUR event this month and has had a direct impact on numerous charities in the surrounding community. The tournament has raised and distributed over $41 million to those in need throughout South Carolina and Georgia since 1987. Last year alone, $3.3 million was distributed to charitable organizations, the arts, medical institutions and for college scholarships.

Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point (New York)

As the entire golf world shifts its focus to the greater New York City area for next month’s PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, look no further than Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx for one of the most memorable public golf experiences in the country.
When Nicklaus Design was approached by the City of New York and the Parks Department about designing a course in one of the world’s largest cities, it was paramount to create a world-class tournament-quality course. Jack and the Nicklaus Design Team created a links experience strategically taking advantage of dramatic and spectacular views of the famous Manhattan skyline, East River, and Whitestone & Throggs Neck Bridges.

“Ferry Point was created to be a unique public golf experience, and it is our collective hope that the golf course will add to New York City’s global reputation, enhance New York’s reputation for quality golf, and give its proud residents a place to play and call home,” said Jack Nicklaus of the remarkable property just miles from Manhattan’s city center.

Your Need-to-Know PGA REACH Events at the 101st PGA Championship

The 2019 PGA Championship is taking a new place within golf’s major championship rotation—becoming the second major of the four events, as it moves from August to May. As part of PGA Championship week, there are a number of special events before Championship rounds begin, including three hosted by PGA REACH, the PGA of America’s charitable foundation.

The mission of PGA REACH, of which both Jack Nicklaus and Howard Milstein are Trustees, is to positively impact the lives of youth, military and diverse populations, by enabling access to PGA Professionals, PGA Sections, the game and workforce of the golf industry.

The 101st PGA Championship will be host to a celebration of PGA REACH’s three pillars—Military, Youth and Inclusion:

PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup (Monday, May 13th) – A nine-hole scramble match among PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) Chapters in the Metropolitan PGA Section (six teams), along with one team apiece from the Carolinas, Gateway, New Jersey, Northern California, Western New York and Philadelphia PGA Sections. The competition celebrates the impact of PGA HOPE, which uses golf as a rehabilitation tool for military Veterans. The goal is to provide a once-in-a-lifetime event for 48 Veterans and the PGA Professionals who are working to help change their lives.

PGA Jr. League Day (Tuesday, May 14th)– PGA Jr. League brings families and friends together around fun, team golf experiences with expert coaching from PGA and LPGA Professionals. PGA Jr. League golfers from the Metropolitan PGA Section will be celebrated with a day at the PGA Championship and a group photo in front of the large scoreboard on the 18th hole.

PGA WORKS Beyond the Green (Wednesday, May 15th) – This career development and exploration event is designed to inspire students from diverse backgrounds to learn about careers in the business of golf through personal interactions with PGA Professionals and corporate business executives. The students will view the course before and during the PGA Championship. PGA WORKS is a strategic initiative designed to diversify the golf industry’s workforce.
