American Lake Veterans Golf Course (November 16-17, 2009)

Jack Nicklaus has dedicated his life to using his position in the sports world to support a number of charities, including efforts to help veterans of wars from Korea to Vietnam to Afghanistan. This week, he volunteered his time to raise funds for American Lake Veterans Golf Course near Tacoma, Wash., where he is donating his design services to take the layout from nine to 18 holes. The fundraiser was held at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Jack was joined by General John Shalikashvili, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1993-97, and is now an honorary chair along with Jack, for American Lake's capital campaign. Gen. Shalikashvili, who is partially paralyzed from a debilitating stroke he suffered in August 2004, uses the course as part of his own rehabilitation. Also in attendance at the event were special guest veterans from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Vietnam War. Photos by Jim Mandeville.
