Ferry Point (July 27, 2010)

With a brilliant sun overhead and the New York skyline in the distance, Jack Nicklaus spent Tuesday touring Ferry Point, the site of his new Signature Golf Course under construction in the Bronx and in the shadows of the Whitestone Bridge. Ferry Point is located on 222 acres of a former landfill and is considered one of the most important golf projects under way in the U.S. Scheduled to open early in 2012, Ferry Point will be a nearly treeless, Irish links-style course, featuring tall, blowing native grasses and dunes with teeing grounds that rise as high as 60 feet above grade and provide splendid views of the East River, and just eight miles away, the Manhattan skyline. On this visit, Jack reviewed the overall links shaping and rough-shaping of greens on six holes-Nos. 3, 4, 5, 7, 12 and 14-to ensure the right strategy and playability. Photos by Jim Mandeville.
