Memorial Tournament Highlighted by 19 Hours of Television Coverage

The 27th annual Memorial Tournament, founded and hosted by Jack Nicklaus, will be held next Thursday through Sunday, May 23-26. Since the official dedication on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, Muirfield Village Golf Club has been the stage for the event's competition in Dublin, Ohio.

We thought you would be interested in the extensive television coverage of the Memorial Tournament and related activities:

· To kick off the Memorial Tournament week, the Jack Nicklaus Museum will host its Grand Opening on Monday. The Golf Channel will provide 2 1/2 hours of live coverage from the museum, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the Grand Opening ceremonies. The ceremony will be emceed by Charlie Mechem, and dignitaries expected to speak at the ceremony include Gary Player, Sir Michael Bonallack, Tim Finchem, and various local and state politicians. The hour-long ceremony will be followed by Golf Central (7:30) and a special edition of Golf Talk Live (8:00), broadcast live from the museum. Jack, Barbara and perhaps other Nicklaus family members are expected to be featured.

· The Golf Channel will also air Wednesday's Honoree Ceremony live from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and the always-entertaining Memorial Golf Clinic, featuring PGA Tour stars and Jack as emcee will air on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 p.m. (taped delay).

· USA Network will provide tournament coverage Thursday and Friday from 3:00-6:00 p.m., with CBS airing a highlights show from 12:45-1:00 a.m. CBS will pick up weekend coverage on Saturday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 2:00-6:00 p.m.

· Lastly, CBS will air its documentary, "Bobby, Jack and Tiger" on Sunday from 1:00-2:00 p.m., as a lead-in to the Memorial's final round.

Last year, Tiger Woods became the first three-peat winner in the Memorial Tournament's history. Should Tiger walk away next week with the crystal Memorial Tournament trophy, he will have accomplished something only two great names in golf history have accomplished - a "four-peat." Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen make up a small and elite class of golfers who have won the same event four consecutive times. Not since Hagen won the 1927 PGA Championship and Sarazen the 1930 Miami Open has this feat been duplicated.

Tiger can also walk away with $810,000, the winner's share of a Memorial Tournament-record $4.5 million purse.
