Fan Reaction to the Nicklaus Museum Opening Ceremony

May 21, 2002

Mr. Nicklaus,
Let me start this epistle by saying I have never liked you very much! You always beat my hero, Mr. Palmer! However, let me say, just as quickly, that my respect for you has just exploded! I just watched the opening ceremony of your museum. Your comments impressed me, VERY MUCH! Your comments about your family, your parents, your children, grandchildren have changed my opinion of you! You are truly a Great golfer, but even more, you are a GREAT person! I have been playing golf since 1957. I have followed your career. I have always been impressed with your ability on the course. Now, I am VERY impressed with you as a person, as a Father, as a Grandfather, as a husband...as a truly Great Person! If I can be even one tenth, one hundredth as good with my children, my grandchildren as you are, I will be a very happy man!

Thanks for all that you have given to this great game of ours, and most of, Thanks for being the truly great Person that you are, and continue to be!

Very Respectfully, with Much admiration,
Lauren P.

Congratulations on the opening of the Nicklaus Golf Museum at THE Ohio State University. I had the pleasure of meeting you in the fall of 1975 (a pretty good year!) at Bloomfield Hills Country Club (near Oakland Hills). It was a Pontiac (GM) thing. I told you then that you were my hero, and you still are! You are the greatest. You are an inspiration to all golfers and sportsman and I thank you for all the great memories. I believe my favorite is the '78 British Open when you got revenge on the Kansas City Bomber! The putt on the seventy-first hole in the '80 US Open was pretty great too! You may remember one other time I met you. It was at the shack at Bloomfield Hills CC. You had just missed the cut (unfortunately and amazingly) at the '85 US Open. You and Jack, Jr. were getting a drink and instead of bothering you, I congratulated Jackie on his (North/South) Amateur victory. You and your family are a class act all the way. The only thing you wouldn't like about me is this (GO BLUE!)

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS on the museum and your wonderful life.

Jack you will go down in history as the greatest golfer of all time. Your consistency has provided me with a lifelong admiration for you.No one has been able to electrify the gallery over a golfing career like you have with the command performance coming in the final round of the 1986 Masters. As a Canadian I would like to have seen your name on the Canadian Open Trophy a few times. However, seven second place finishes surely makes you the leader in that category.

Your golf career has been a work of art but more important you have been a wonderful role model throughout the world. Your beautiful family is a living monument to Jack Nicklaus a very special human being.

As a person going to be 62 on August 22 I lived your career with you via TV and thank God a few times in person at the Canadian Open.

Thank you Jack for all the memories and particularly for the special way you played the wonderful old game of golf. All the best for many years of happiness with your family- the real heart of The Golden Bear.
