Site: Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, Ky.
United States Captain: Paul Azinger
European Captain: Nick Faldo

Proceeds from the Ryder Cup support PGA membership and outreach programs, as well as designated area charitable organizations. Out of the Ryder Cup, The PGA directs $2.6 million to U.S. Captain and player designated charities and universities of their choice to help fund “Play Golf America Universities,” a PGA Growth of the Game initiative.

The Trophy
In 1927, English seed merchant Samuel A. Ryder presented the Ryder Cup to the British PGA to place as a prize for an international competition between American and British professional golfers. The Ryder Cup was purchased for £250. The trophy is 17 inches high and weighs four pounds. The golfer figure depicted on top of the trophy reflects the image of Abe Mitchell, friend and instructor of Samuel Ryder, who competed on the 1929, ’31 and ’33 Great Britain Team.
Method of Play
Match Play, including foursomes (two-man teams in alternate shot), four-ball (two-man teams in better balls) and singles (18 holes at match play).
U.S. Eligibility
The 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup Team is chosen on the basis of points compiled by The PGA of America. The top eight players will be determined through a points system that began Aug. 27, 2006 and concludes with eight selections being determined on Aug. 11, 2008. Captain Paul Azinger will complete the team with four Captain’s Selections on Sept. 2.
