Jack Nicklaus Visits the "Wounded Warriors"
April 9, 2008 - Upon leaving Augusta, GA, and Bush Field on Wednesday, Jack Nicklaus spent time with a group of more than 40 Soldiers from nearby Fort Gordon and its Eisenhower Army Medical Center. The Soldiers are members of the hospital’s Warriors in Transition Unit (WTU) or the local VA’s Active Duty Rehabilitation program. Many of these men and women, known as ‘Wounded Warriors,’ have been injured while deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. A majority, who complete their rehabilitation, return to active duty and remain in uniform. Jack took photos and signed autographs for each Soldier, as well as family members. When he arrived, Jack received a Certificate of Appreciation, after which he said, ‘You are thanking me?! I am here to thank you!’ One Soldier then pulled a patch off his uniform, handed it to Jack and said, ‘I wore this patch close to my heart for two tours of duty….and I want to give it to you today.’ Overcome with emotion during the visit, Jack said, ‘I got choked up, I could not speak. I wish the entire country knew about these men and women.’
