Nicklaus presented Bush Inspiration Award
The Three Amigos, a charitable foundation started by CBS
broadcaster Jim Nantz and golfers Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister,
presented Jack Nicklaus with The Three Amigos George Bush Inspiration Award
at a gala dinner held May 6 at Houston Country Club. The award is given
annually to an individual who has inspired others through extraordinary
achievements.
"This is a very special honor to me for many reasons, not the
least of which is the fact President Bush's name is on the award and because
of what he has meant to this country and to me, personally," Nicklaus said
to a packed room that included former President Bush and his wife Barbara,
as well as numerous celebrities and business leaders. "I have always admired
President Bush for being a great leader, humanitarian, and wonderful family
man. As you may or may not know, he's got one or two kids who have gone on
to make something of their lives.
"I have always appreciated President Bush's love and passion for
the game of golf. In addition to the time he and his wife Barbara give to
many charitable efforts, President Bush is tireless in his efforts to give
back and grow the game he so loves."
Nantz, Couples and McCallister were roommates at the University
of Houston, and in 1994, began raising funds for three charities. Together,
The Three Amigos have raised millions of dollars for Alzheimer's research
(Nantz's father suffers from the disease), cancer research (Couples' wife
has battled cancer, which also took both his parents' lives), and the rare
eye disease Pseudoxanthoma -- PXE (McCallister's wife suffers from the
disease and is legally blind).
"In this award description, it talks about extraordinary
achievements," Nicklaus said. "When you talk about extraordinary, talk about
the people for whom you're here tonight. Talk about those who have
encountered these diseases, who battle debilitating illnesses, and who fight
daily for their lives.
"At the same time, applaud Jim, Fred and Blaine. These three
could have easily rested on the fact that by what they have accomplished in
their lives and careers, they will be remembered. But by going beyond that
and doing extraordinary things like putting together The Three Amigos, yes,
they are being remembered but more important, they are making sure that
these causes and the people impacted by them are never forgotten."
Past winners of the Bush Inspiration Award include Alan
Shephard, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson and Gene Sarazen.
