Chappell Wins Jack Nicklaus Award
Recognized as Division I Player of the Year
NORMAN, Okla. — Kevin Chappell of UCLA was named the Division I winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award. The Nicklaus Award is presented annually to the national player of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Chappell earned medalist honors three times this season - the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships, the Pac-10 Men’s Golf Championship and the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. Her recorded four other top five finishes and only placed outside of the top 10 twice in 12 stroke-play events during the 2007-08 campaign. Chappell also recorded a 4-0 record at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship. In addition to his individual NCAA title - the first for a Bruin men’s golfer, he helped lead UCLA to the team championship.
Chappell joined Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene (NAIA), St. John Fisher’s Scott Harris Jr. (Division III) and Jarin Todd of Sonoma State (Division II) at the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, just outside of Nicklaus’ hometown of Columbus, to receive their trophies from Mr. Nicklaus.

Sonoma State junior earns honor for second-straight season
HOUSTON - Jarin Todd of Sonoma State was named the Division II winnner of the Jack Nicklaus Award. This is the second-straight season the junior has claimed the award. The Nicklaus Award is presented annually to the national player of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Todd won three tournaments this season - the St. Martin’s Invitational, the WWU Invitational and the Stanslaus/Buzzini Invitational. He also placed runner-up four times and only placed outside of the top five three times. Todd did not finish outside of the top 10 in 12 events this season. He also led Division II in score vs. par and adjusted stroke average.
Harris Named Jack Nicklaus Award Winner
St. John Fisher Senior honored as Division III Player of the Year
Duluth, Georgia - St. John Fisher's Scott Harris, Jr. was named the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award for Division III. The Nicklaus is presented annually to the national player of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and the NAIA.
Harris had six victories this season, including the Division III NCAA Championship. His other wins came at the SLU Men’s Invitational, Nazareth Hobart Invitational, ECAC Upstate Championship, Mid-Atlantic Region Championship and the Fred B. Kravetz Invitational. He also had three other top-ten finishes this season and finished outside the top ten only once.
“I was very surprised to win the Nicklaus Award,” said James. “It’s good to be recognized but surprising. It shows how good I can play and gives me confidence.”
Cyr Wins NAIA Jack Nicklaus Award
Point Loma junior honored as NAIA Player of the Year
PLYMOUTH, Ind. — Point Loma Nazarene’s Sam Cyr has been named the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award. The award is presented annually to the national player of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Cyr won three tournaments this season, including the NAIA National Championship. He also carded six top-five finishes in addition to his three wins.
“I’m very happy and honored to win this award,” Cyr said following the announcement.
