King Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth and Jack Nicklaus Announce 3rd Annual Jack Nicklaus Heart And Stroke Challenge To Raise Money For Cardiovascular Research And Education

Bristol, TN and Collegeville, PA - June 14, 2006 - Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus will hit the ceremonial first tee shot to open the 3rd Annual Jack Nicklaus Heart & Stroke Challenge. The focus of the Challenge is to raise awareness about the increasing risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke among people age 55 and older. Cardiovascular disease is the nation's number one killer. Cardiovascular disease affects more than 70 million Americans, many of whom are over the age of 55.

"We are thrilled with this program and proud of the money we raised last year," said Mr. Nicklaus. "It is important for all of us to increase our awareness of our heart health and how we can take care of our hearts." A long-time hypertension patient, Mr. Nicklaus, who takes ALTACE® (ramipril) to help control his high blood pressure, worked with King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to create the program--an initiative that stresses the importance of people age 55 and older recognizing the increasing risk for cardiovascular events and talking to their doctors about what they can do to help reduce their risk.

At age 55 and older, heart health should be a priority.

  • Men and women age 55 and older are at an increased risk for suffering a cardiovascular event such as heart attack, stroke and even cardiovascular-related death compared with those age 45 to 54.
    • Prevalence of stroke more than doubled for men.
    • Prevalence of cardiovascular disease more than doubled in women.
  • 92% of deaths from heart attack occur after age 55.

The general public is invited to enter local golf tournaments at participating golf courses and will have the opportunity to donate money to The Larry King Cardiac Foundation by purchasing a "mulligan." Last year this event raised nearly $80,000, which was donated to The Larry King Cardiac Foundation. Each member from the two winning teams at each of the local golf courses participating in the Heart and Stroke Challenge will win a framed lithograph of Nicklaus' farewell at the British Open and will become eligible for a day of golf activities with Jack Nicklaus. Seven regional tournaments will be held in Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, New York and Florida.
