Jack Nicklaus and British Open programming
Nicklaus.com Report
As Jack Nicklaus heads into his final British Open, fans have an opportunity to whet their Open Championship appetite with several, in-depth interviews that will air over the next week. In addition to the actual tournament coverage that begins Thursday, you might be interested in some programming notes on several upcoming shows dedicating features to the Golden Bear:
- Friday, July 8, at 9 p.m. ET, catch HBO's CostasNOW to see Emmy-winning host Bob Costas in his sit-down with Jack that was taped last week in the library of The Bear's Club, Jack's home club in Jupiter, Fla. Costas, who also walked a few holes with Jack while he practiced at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Jupiter, covered a multitude of topics related to Jack's final British Open, his competitive career, and his love of and dedication to family. After the initial airing Friday night, there will be numerous re-broadcasts of the show the entire month of July, beginning with Saturday morning at 1:00 a.m. and then 10:00 a.m.
- Sunday, July 10, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET, tune into ABC to watch the network's British Open Preview Show. Near the top of the show, viewers can catch ABC's interview with Jack, which was taped on site at St. Andrews in May. ABC will then use portions of the interview during tournament week in their highlight shows, including Saturday morning, July 16, at 1:35 a.m. ET and later that day from 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET.
- Thursday, July 14, on the morning of Jack's final Open Championship appearance, NBC's TODAY show will air a one-on-one between co-host Matt Lauer and Jack. The interview, which was taped recently on site at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., will cover Jack's career, family and plans for the future. NBC News/TODAY airs 7:00-10:00 a.m. (all time zones).
- Thursday, July 14, during TNT's early tournament coverage, you can catch portions of Jack's interview with Jim Huber during a segment of the broadcast called "At the Turn." The segment is scheduled to air around 10 a.m. ET. It will also re-broadcast in the "Encore" portion of the show between 2:30-7:00 p.m. ET. Part two of Huber's interview will air at the same times on Friday, July 15. The first portion of the interview focuses primarily on Jack's memories of his Open wins in 1970 and '78 and touches on his reasons for returning to St. Andrews this year, including the producer's favorite sound bite about how Barbara didn't like the outfit he wore at St. Andrews in his final round in 2000, so he is getting a mulligan of sort. The second part of the interview focuses more on Jack's legacy in the game and his plans after competitive golf.
As always, broadcast schedules are subject to change, and we will do what we can to update you accordingly.
