Grand Slam for Golden Bear
FIFE Council was proud to present the renowned golfer Jack Nicklaus with a set of Bobby Jones Grand Slam Golf Clubs in recognition of his outstanding contribution to golf.
At the presentation last night at the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse in St Andrews, Provost John Simpson presented the 'Golden Bear' with a set of hickory clubs which are an exact replica of the clubs used by the legendary Bobby Jones in 1930, his grand slam year.
Provost Simpson said: "It was truly a privilege and pleasure to present Jack with this unique gift on behalf of the people of Fife. It marks our appreciation of the contribution he has made to golf. Jack has been a most welcome visitor to the Kingdom throughout his outstanding career and he has brought us great honour through his long association with St Andrews and Fife."
Jack won three Open Championships in Scotland, two at the Old Course in St Andrews in 1970 and 1978 and this year's tournament will be his last after he announced his retirement earlier this year. In fact, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club moved the Open Championship to 2005 so that Jack would have an opportunity to play his last Open in St Andrews.
"All that remains for me to say is that I hope Jack has a successful final round at the Old Course and that he has a long and enjoyable retirement" concluded Provost Simpson.
