Post-round Press Conference (Battle at Bighorn)
July 29, 2002
Opening comments:
Woods -- It was a lot of fun to compete. We made 15 birdies as a group. Never seen anything like that. You knew you had to make a birdie to win a hole. We all played pretty well and I think the fans enjoyed it.
Nicklaus -- When I played with Tiger in Valhalla, I thought it might be the last time to play with him. I knew Lee and I should have been 40 yards up on the tees. I know it is a different game. I used to make par fives look short. I had a great partner. It was an honor to play with all of them.
Trevino -- It was a great day for me. To get to play with Tiger, it is a completely different game they play. Sergio isn't big, but he is extremely wiry. I played better than I thought I would. The highlight was, I told Tiger he couldn't hit his 2-iron past my driver and he couldn't do it. I told everybody to look at the crowd. I said Jack likes to hit it stiff when all the people are watching. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Garcia -- It was a lot of fun. To have chance to play with Jack and Lee, it was really a pleasure. I don't have a chance to do it many times. We all played really well. We put on a good show.
Tiger how happy were you with your game?
Woods - I played well. Played a practice round yesterday and made 8 birdies in 14 holes. I had good control over my ball.
Sergio, your message for Hispanic people?
Garcia -- I think the main message is to go out there and play and just try. Lee and I and others like us give a message to them to try as hard as they can, enjoy the game and play as hard as you can.
Jack and Lee, does this reinforce that something has to be done with golf ball?
Nicklaus -- These guys have seen golf balls change from certain distance to phenomenal distance. For the protection of golf courses, we need a change. Tiger has pretty much said he wants to break my records and he will before he turns 20 (sic). If he passes that goal, I think he would like to say he played the same game I did. Just like I wanted to play the same game as Hogan did. The only way to control it is with the golf ball. I'm talking about tournament golf. At Muirfield the rough was knee high. I lost a few caddies over there. I wish we could do something with the golf ball. Who is going to break Tiger's records? What game will they play?
Tiger, do you like having to be a spokesperson for so many issues... to be in the spotlight?
Tiger - I've never liked it. I accept it, but I don't have to like it. I have come to realize that I like to compete and I love to win and because of that people want to talk to me.
Comments on the weather?
Garcia - It was a nice day. No clouds. It was hot, but I don't think we mind hot weather. You're looser and can hit the ball longer.
Nicklaus -- I've never played in weather this hot. It was 117.
Trevino - That was the time, Jack. The temperature was only 105.
Tiger, should you take social stands?
I didn't know about the minority golfers on tours. I have never been asked for money to support them. My foundation has helped junior golf. We try to piggyback with American Golf and make it more accessible. Also piggybacked with First Tee Association. We're about education. Not to become best golfers in life, but to give them hope.
Should you have more of a voice?
If you put it on just me, why not all of us. Try to make an impact every single day. If everyone took that approach, you wouldn't have those barriers.
The crowds.
Nicklaus -- People are people. We have more, but I don't think much has changed.
On what he saw today.
Trevino -- It's like Jack was saying. They don't play the same game. I can hit the ball longer now. I used to hit the ball about 240 and that was great. But now you have that souped up ball. I hit one shot 300 and I couldn't see those guys. It was a pleasure to play with them. But now I know. I loved it. It was a great day for me.
How tough were greens today?
Woods -- Greens were quick, but perfectly smooth.
Garcia - They were slopey, but you could make a lot of putts if you put good strokes on them.
How would Tiger and Sergio have fared in 1970?
Trevino -- I don't know. I think Jack could have handled them. He could have played with them. I couldn't have. It's hard to say. I had enough trouble with Jack.
Nicklaus -- I think they would be champions in our era and we would be champions in their era.
Sergio, your routine is faster now.
Garcia -- I talked to friends and to Jack. I didn't have enough time to focus on changing things. I decided to work hard on it at Hartford. I was in contention at the British Open and it felt great.
Tiger, how good was it to get back out here again?
Woods - It was good to get back out here, but I only had one bad day there. It wasn't like I was struggling. It felt good to get out and compete with Jack and against these two guys. That was fun, and to win was more fun.
Garcia -- It was just a hard day at the British Open for everybody.
