The Jack Nicklaus Heart & Stroke Challenge, aimed at raising awareness about the risks of heart attack and stroke, is launching its third annual series of month-long golf events throughout Morris County.
The public is invited to compete in participating golf courses in teams of two. Entry is free, with the option of buying a $10 mulligan to raise money for cardiovascular disease research.
Each member of the two winning teams at the local level will win a framed lithograph at Nicklaus' farewell at the British Open and will become eligible for a day of golf activities with Nicklaus in West Palm Beach, Fla.
A longtime hypertension patient, Nicklaus wants to raise awareness about the increasing risk of heart attack and stroke among men and women above the age of 55. The legendary golfer encourages men and women to speak to their doctors about what they can do to reduce that risk.
Cardiovascular disease is the nation's No. 1 killer, affecting more than 70 million Americans. Ninety-two percent of deaths from heart attack occur after age 55.
Last year, the event raised nearly $80,000 through the sale of $10 mulligans. The money was donated to The Larry King Cardiac Foundation.
Other regional tournaments are held in Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, New York and Florida.
