Bruce Borland Golf Course Scholarship established at the University of Illinois

The Borland Scholarship is dedicated to a golf course designer killed in the plane crash that took the life of Payne Stewart.

NORTH PALM BEACH, FL --- To commemorate the life of Bruce Borland and all that he meant to the game of golf, an annual scholarship has been established in honor of the late Senior Design Associate at Nicklaus Design. The scholarship will benefit and assist third-year Landscape Architecture students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are interested in becoming golf course designers.

"The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois is extremely grateful for this generous and creative scholarship to honor the memory of Bruce Borland," said Dr. Jim Wescoat, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture. "We look forward to educating students who share his interests, values, and expertise."

Mr. Borland was among six people, including golfer Payne Stewart, killed in October 1999, when a private jet crashed in South Dakota.

"We are very excited that Bruce's name will live on at his alma mater," said Chris Cochran, a close friend and coworker of Mr. Borland's at Nicklaus Design. "We want to thank his family, friends and all of the members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects who made this scholarship possible."

Mr. Borland, who resided in Jupiter, FL., was a 1981 graduate of the University of Illinois, where he earned his degree in Landscape Architecture. He began his golf course design career by working with several firms in the Chicago area. Mr. Borland earned membership into The American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1986, and established his own Chicago-based design firm in 1989. He then joined Nicklaus Design in 1990 during an expansion of the of the golf-course design firm.

Mr. Borland was the Design Associate on 18 Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses - including nationally acclaimed Colleton River Plantation in Hilton Head, SC - and two co-design courses, all of which have opened since 1992. Mr. Borland was also the solo designer on three projects over that period of time.

"Bruce Borland was with me for almost 10 years," Jack Nicklaus said. "In that time, we did numerous golf courses together, we traveled together, and we had a great deal of fun together. He was simply a terrific addition to our company, and a good friend. He was also a wonderful husband and father.

"I am very pleased that Bruce's memory and legacy will be perpetuated through this scholarship."
