Desert Mountain - Chiricahua Captures Jack Nicklaus Cup Matches Crown
The 20th playing of the Jack Nicklaus Cup Matches was recently contested at
the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, and the team representing Desert
Mountain-Chiricahua (Scottsdale,Ariz.) claimed victory by one Stableford
point in the 35-team field. The runner-up was The Club at Carlton Woods
(Woodlands, Texas) in one of the mostly tightly contested events in
tournament history. Only 5 points separated the first four places.
The 35 teams that gathered represent Nicklaus Design clubs from around the
world. The event was a 54-hole tournament that included scramble,
better-ball and modified chapman formats, as each team accumulated
Stableford points over the three days to determine the overall champion. A
complete team listing and the final results are found below.
The annual Shootout competition played out over the Grand Cypress East nine
after the first round, with 18 teams qualifying for this hole-by-hole
elimination event. The team from Las Campanas (Santa Fe, New Mexico) emerged
victorious on the ninth hole, besting the second- place finishers from The
Summit Course at Cordillera (Edwards, Colo.). Third place went to Bearpath
Country Club (Eden Prairie, Minn.).
Congratulations to each club and competitor in the 20th Jack Nicklaus Cup
Matches, and a special thanks to the Grand Cypress Resort for a great job
hosting the tournament.
