Team Nicklaus set to take on challenging field this weekend at annual Del Webb Father/Son Challenge
In his 10th year participating in the event, Jack Nicklaus teams up with son, Jack Nicklaus II, Dec. 4-7 at the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge at ChampionsGate in Orlando, Fla., as golf’s legends compete with their sons at this annual event.
The Golden Bear and Jack Nicklaus II will begin the weekend Thursday as they tee off at 8:50 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., respectively, in the Pro-Am event on the International course. Team Nicklaus continues play Saturday at 9:40 a.m. for the first round, and is paired with Arnold Palmer and grandson, Sam Saunders.
In addition to catching sight of the Golden Bear, fans will enjoy the rare opportunity to see many of the game’s greatest on the same golf course as they compete in the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge. The field includes Palmer, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Greg Norman and the 2008 FedEx Cup Champion on the PGA TOUR, Vijay Singh.
In this unique invitational, now in its fifth year at ChampionsGate, each father included in the field must have won at least one of golf’s four major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open or PGA Championship) or The Players Championship on the PGA Tour to qualify.
The teams will be competing for the $1.085 million purse, and the prestigious Willie Park Trophy. The trophy, a red leather belt with sterling silver accents, similar to the belts awarded in modern times to boxing champions, was named after Park in honor of being the first winner of the British Open, the world’s oldest golf championship.
In 2006 at the Father/Son, a pair of Jacks thrilled fans with a back-nine charge that included birdies on eight straight holes after making the turn at 2-under. That charge brought them to 10-under through 18 holes and left them three shots back of the first-round leaders, Davis and Dru Love. They finished in a tie for sixth at 62-63—125.
Tickets for the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge are on sale now and can be purchased by phone at (407) 787-GOLF (407-787-4653) or by visiting www.delwebbfatherson.com.
