Jack Nicklaus Named Golf World's No. 1 Newsmaker Of The Year
Magazine Unveils Editors' Ranking of Golf's
25 Most Compelling People and Events of 2005
New York, NY, Dec 14, 2005 - As the PGA and LPGA Tours wind down for the holidays, Golf World looks back on the ups and downs of the 2005 golf season with the release of its 12th annual "Newsmakers" issue. Appearing in the December 16, 2005 edition, Golf World ranks Jack Nicklaus as golf's number one "Newsmaker," as well as the 24 other people and events that made 2005 an incredible year in professional golf.
"Jack certainly made news in 2005, in ways happy, sad, ceremonial and awkward," says Golf World Editor-in-Chief, Geoff Russell in his "Editor's Letter" appearing in the issue. The public watched Nicklaus closely this year at the British Open in July where he closed out his competitive career, at The Presidents Cup in September where he led the U.S. team to victory and throughout a family tragedy he publicly endured. In 2005, The Golden Bear generated headlines and remained in the spotlight, thus making him a natural choice as Golf World's number one "Newsmaker of the Year."
As Bill Fields wrote in this issue:
"...Our gaze kept being directed toward the man with the steely blues, Golf World's No. 1 newsmaker, Jack Nicklaus. He grieved as a grandfather, inspired as a Presidents Cup captain and exited an arena, the major championships, that he had commanded as no other. Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning said, 'Measure not the work until the day's out and the labor done.' On a golden afternoon where the game was born, and where he had ruled, it was time."
Following Nicklaus in the ranking and rounding out the top five are: Tiger Woods (2); Michelle Wie (3); Annika Sorenstam (4); The Presidents Cup (5).
