In one of the closest competitions in event history, the team from Desert Mountain–Apache (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won a tiebreaker over two other teams and to win the 26th annual Jack Nicklaus Cup Matches, which concluded September 23 at Old Greenwood (Truckee, Calif.) Twenty-eight teams, consisting of a golf professional and three members of varying skill levels, representing Nicklaus Design clubs from around the world gathered at two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses—Old Greenwood and Montreux Golf & Country Club in Reno, Nev., to compete in the 54-hole tournament. Teams participated in scramble, best-ball and modified chapman formats. Teams accumulated stableford points for their net team scores over three days of play to determine the overall champion. In taking the title, the Desert Mountain—Apache team of Pro Scott Frisch and members Dave Arbesman, Paul Clegg and Bill Eckholm edged out the home team from Old Greenwood and Ruby Hill Golf Club (Pleasanton, Calif.), which finished third. These three teams each tied with 253 points and the overall winners were determined by a tiebreaker. Ties were broken by a cumulative matching of all three back-nine scorecards from each of the three formats, starting with the last nine holes, continuing with the last six holes, the last three holes, and finally the 18th hole. The top nine teams from each bracket after the first and second rounds qualified for the annual "shootout" competition at Montreux. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Jupiter (Fla.) and Desert Mountain–Cochise won the hole-by-hole elimination events, while representatives from Barrington Golf Club (Aurora, Ohio) and Desert Mountain—Chiricahua came away with first in each of the putting contests.
