Six Nicklaus Design courses to host PGA TOUR events in 2016–17

The PGA TOUR announced this week it will include 47 FedExCup tournaments during the 2016–2017 season—six of them at Nicklaus Design courses. Tournaments at PGA West, PGA National, Harbour Town Golf Links, Muirfield Village Golf Club, Glen Abbey Golf Club, and Montreux Golf and Country Club are not impacted by venue changes and/or new title sponsors this year.
The CareerBuilder Challenge, held January 16–22 at PGA West, kicks off 2017 for Nicklaus Design. The Nicklaus Tournament Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is the host course. Major champion Jason Dufner won the event in 2016, defeating 2015 Memorial Tournament winner David Lingmerth in a playoff. The Tournament Course, nicknamed “Nick Tourney” by its members, is a true ball strikers’ golf course in a magnificent desert setting. It is forgiving off the tee and extremely demanding around the greens.
The Honda Classic is then played at the Jack Nicklaus-redesigned Champion Course at PGA National Resort & Spa the week of Feb. 20–26 in the Golden Bear’s backyard of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. With the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation as its primary beneficiary, its position on the schedule as the kick-off for the Florida Swing, and its challenging layout, The Honda Classic annually attracts one of the top fields on TOUR. It also has received enormous community support, evident in a record attendance of 202,128 confirmed spectators in 2016.  In 2015, Golf Digest rated the Champion one of the top-five public golf courses in Florida and in 2016, Golfweek named the course to its top-100 Best Resort Courses list.
The RBC Heritage—one of the longest-running events on TOUR—makes its way to Jack Nicklaus’ first-ever golf course design April 10–16. Harbour Town Golf Links, a design collaboration with Pete Dye, opened in 1969 in the golf-rich community of Hilton Head, S.C., and has been a mainstay on rankings of the best courses in the U.S. ever since. The event debuted the same year it opened and Nicklaus went on to win in 1975.
Muirfield Village Golf Club, perhaps the crown jewel in Nicklaus’ sparkling design résumé of nearly 300 courses, is host to the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide from May 29 to June 4. The prestigious tournament has marked the maiden victory for several Tour stars, including Hideki Matsuyama in 2014, Lingmerth in 2015, and William McGirt in 2016. The tournament also guarantees an exciting finish—it is the only event in PGA TOUR history to produce three consecutive first-time winners in three consecutive playoffs. Close to the heart of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, the tournament gives back to the Central Ohio community primarily through its support of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Jack Nicklaus’ first-ever solo design of Glen Abbey is in the spotlight again as host of the RBC Canadian Open from July 24–30. Glen Abbey has hosted the Canadian Open more than 25 times since it opened for play in 1976. Located in Ontario, Glen Abbey was the first course to be designed with the spectator in mind. Not only did Nicklaus design Glen Abbey, but he also finished runner-up in the Canadian Open seven times (1965, ’68, ’75, ’76, ’81, ’94, and ’85).
The Barracuda Championship—the TOUR’s only event played with a Modified Stableford scoring system—is played at Jack Nicklaus-designed Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nev. Montreux is a very special piece of property with great variety. Its backdrop of trees, streams, and mountains make for a beautiful setting. A PGA TOUR event is being played for the 17th time at Montreux, which opened in 1997.
