Record Day at Creighton Farms

ALDIE, Va.—The 2018 Creighton Farms Invitational hosted by Jack Nicklaus last week raised $1.43 million for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and the National PKU Alliance, two charitable organizations providing support to children’s healthcare and rare disease initiatives. The fundraiser, now in its seventh year, is staged on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course he opened in 2007.
“We are amazed and humbled at how the Northern Virginia and Greater Washington communities have stepped up for children and families in need,” said Barbara Nicklaus, Chair of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. “Our goal since we created our Foundation in 2004 was to impact the lives of children not only in our South Florida community, but nationally and globally. We are proud that Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has treated children from every state and 119 countries. Through the Creighton Farms Invitational, we can further our mission, but at the same time, we can help find a cure for PKU and touch families like Jerry and Jill Elkins, who live daily with the impact PKU has on their 4-year-old son Hudson.
“Children are our reward for living, so we thank everyone who shares our passion for keeping our children healthy.”

Small Course, Big Impact!

JUPITER, Fla. — Nicklaus Design has created over 415 courses in 45 countries around the world, and over 1,000 professional tournaments have been staged on Nicklaus courses. As a result, it is not easy to come up with a ‘First’ after 50 years, but it just happened! Nicklaus Design has created its very first putting course in Jupiter, Florida, just five miles from its corporate headquarters. Why? To help the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and local children’s healthcare facilities.
“Jack and I are thrilled to see this unique idea become a reality,” said Barbara Nicklaus, Founder and Chairperson of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. “It is especially nice to have this facility here in our own backyard for families to enjoy and to help support children’s healthcare in South Florida.”
The new Nicklaus putting course, named after the Golden Cub character created by Barbara Nicklaus, is a first of its kind… and it is definitely not “windmill” miniature golf. The Golden Cub Miniature Golf Course features holes inspired by famous designs like the Road Hole at St. Andrews; Spectacles, the notable par-five 14th at Carnoustie Golf Links where the British Open is being played this month; and of course, design philosophies by the Golden Bear himself at some of his famous signature courses.
“This was definitely a new and unique project for us,” explained Nicklaus Design Associate Chad Goetz, “We approached the design process for the Golden Cub in a manner very similar to the methods and philosophies Jack taught us for designing full-scale courses. We looked beyond typical miniature course design elements and instead focused on variety, strategy and creating a unique and fun experience for children, parents and grandparents. The team worked hard to create hole strategies that replicated certain types of putts found on full-size courses. This putting course is unlike anything people have seen. Golden Cub relies on slope and undulation to create interest and strategy. The design emphasizes touch, with control of pace being a critical element on many holes. Additionally, many holes try to tempt players with high risk-and-reward design elements that bring excitement to the play of the course. The result is a miniature golf course that can be fun for the casual player and a challenge for seasoned golfers.”
When it was time to take the design strategy and build the course, Nicklaus Design sought the help of its partner, Southwest Greens, to construct the course, which also features the patented Golden Bear Turf. “What a pleasure it was to work so closely with Southwest Greens” said Goetz. “Their on-site crews have unparalleled experience in bringing to life unique green complexes, and they were able to help guide us through the various challenges of implementing this never-seen-before design. The final result exceeded our expectations, and it will be something we at Nicklaus Design plan to explore for the future.”
With the course opening this month, the Nicklaus Companies have enjoyed bringing such a unique attraction to the Downtown Abacoa development and most importantly, to the many children who will benefit from the donation to the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, including those being served at nearby Jupiter Medical Center and the Nicklaus Children’s Outpatient Centers.
“It is our mission as a company to give back,” explained Nicklaus Companies CEO John Reese. “We are always striving as a company to find new ways to attract people to the game and to explore innovative ideas to bring entertainment through the game to people of all lifestyles who enjoy family activities. We are now very actively pursuing new business models – non-traditional, tech-driven businesses – to expand entertainment into not only golf but other sports, with millennials and families as our focus.”

Another First! This One in New Hampshire

Thornton, N.H. — Nicklaus Design’s initial stage of redesign work has been completed in New Hampshire, the first project in the state for the company. The goal of the renovation was for Nicklaus to update and re-strategize the existing course in the picturesque White Mountains. Owl’s Nest owners also challenged Nicklaus Design to create a new appearance and maximize the breathtaking views that surround almost every hole.
Nicklaus Design Associate David Savic led the team reshaping fairways, adding bunkers, and updating many green complexes and tee boxes. The next stage for the project includes redesigning the practice facility and developing new features on the course.
“Owl’s Nest is a wonderful piece of property, and we are fortunate to work on a project as special as this,” said Savic. “It is a scenic and challenging golf course in a beautiful setting. The NMP golf construction team, the developer, the project manager and our team collaborated to create one of the best courses in the region.”
