Nicklaus Design X GOLF Magazine Contest Receives Record Entries
After a sixty-day entry period, with designs submitted every day, GOLF Magazine and Nicklaus Design have amassed almost 200 entries of golf hole designs by readers, fans and aspiring golf course architects from around the globe. Just last week, Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II huddled together to evaluate the finalists. Just think, one talented individual will inspire an actual dream par-4 that will be implemented by the architects on the Nicklaus Design team! The variety in designs has been tremendous including long, short, drivable and risk-reward holes! The top 10 are here and the winner will be selected later this week!
In addition to inspiring an actual golf hole, the winner receives an all-expenses-paid trip to South Florida to meet the Nicklaus Design team, tour the Nicklaus headquarters, and play a Nicklaus-designed course with those team members who work on Nicklaus courses around the world.

Quixote Club Under Rapid Construction with Jack Nicklaus II:
An extensive Nicklaus Design redesign project continues at a fast pace and is planning to open on time later this year. Jack Nicklaus II and David Savic are heading up the design renovation work for Nicklaus Design in Sumter, SC, in collaboration with Kris Spence.
“We are very excited to be a part of such a comprehensive renovation project,” said Jack Nicklaus II, Vice Chairman of Nicklaus Companies. “When I saw the property and Greg Thompson shared the club’s vision for the future, I couldn’t wait to get started on the design plans. The land we are working with is beautiful, and it is special to be part of a project that will reinvest in the community.”
Back To School: Nicklaus Design Carving a Niche with Collegiate Golf Courses
Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II recently opened their Seminole Legacy Golf Club at Florida State University in Tallahassee, becoming the third Nicklaus Design university golf course project completed. The Seminole Legacy course will be the home of FSU’s Men’s and Women’s golf teams.
Jack and Jack II collaborated on the project with Nicklaus Designer Chris Cochran. The layout—characterized by extensive movement, elevation changes, and mature trees—is sure to become one of the premier courses on the college circuit as well as in the state of Florida.
“The Nicklaus family has a lot of history at Florida State,” said Jack Nicklaus. “My son Steve played football there and we have six grandchildren who attended FSU. So, when given the opportunity to leave a legacy of golf at the university, we were excited.”
The multimillion-dollar renovation included reconfiguration and rebuilding of all 18 holes, a new short course and practice facility, and the addition of a lake alongside the 8th hole. The par-72, 18-hole golf course stretches to 7,800 yards with up to eight sets of tees, presenting a stern test for lower-handicap players as well as an enjoyable round for the beginning golfer playing from the appropriate tee.

PLAY RESUMES: With a theme of “Pairing Pro’s with Partners,” the Nicklaus Companies is taking the lead in helping its family of golf courses get back on track and to drive revenue for struggling clubs. While more and more golf courses open for play across the country, we recognize that golf shop operations remain restricted and merchandising revenue limited. Until normal operations resume, we have created a program with several of our licensing partners to fulfill direct-to-member orders while providing a margin or commission to the golf shop without any cash outlay or inventory risk.
ON THE MOVE: Founded by Jack Nicklaus in 1976, the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide has been rescheduled for July 13-19 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Jack and Jack II were in town this past weekend to continue work on the initial stages of the golf course renovation project that will be fully completed in time for the playing of the 2021 event. This year’s tournament will be broadcasted to a vast international audience on TV and live streamed; CBS Sports and the Golf Channel will broadcast the tournament live July 16-19, as one of the world’s top international fields competes for the right as winner to be congratulated by the Golden Bear on the final hole.
“We are thrilled to be working closely with the PGA TOUR as well as the State of Ohio, local leadership and health officials to stage this year’s tournament under the safest conditions for our fans, players, volunteers and employees,” said Tournament Chairman Jack Nicklaus II.
SAFETY FIRST WITH KOLON: Our 36-year Jack Nicklaus Apparel partner, Kolon Industries, was one of the first companies to receive government approval to create Nicklaus-branded face masks for distribution throughout South Korea, online and in Jack Nicklaus Shops.
RIGHT ON TARGET: Target stores across the country continue to support the needs of Americans both online and at store curbside pick-up. Target recently brought on additional Nicklaus apparel products for the summer that include men’s, women’s and children’s apparel.
SHALOM INTERNATIONAL PROVIDES FOR U.S. MILITARY: The U.S. Military purchased the entire inventory of Nicklaus-branded hand sanitizer products made by Shalom International. Don’t worry, more sanitizing products are in the works and will be available for June delivery to Nicklaus courses as clubs open and peak summer play resumes.
SAFE GET-AWAYS: There are many fascinating trends as a result of the pandemic, and one of the hardest hit industries is travel. However, as people around the world continue to practice safe distancing and avoid large gatherings, the Jack Nicklaus Residence Club has experienced a recent spike in interest in the ability to access private homes as a safe and attractive alternative to large hotels with community pools and restaurants. www.jacknicklausrc.com.

DRONING ON: Nicklaus Director of Photography Jim Mandeville has used his sheltering time as an opportunity to complete extensive FAA certification classes to enable the Nicklaus Companies to shoot drone video and photography where others are not permitted. Air space is restricted, including the majority of Nicklaus golf course locations, and the new license to operate will greatly expand our service to Nicklaus Design clients, who have courses both under construction and already completed. Check out Jim’s recent trip to North Palm Beach Country Club.
