11th annual Buoniconti Fund Celebrity Golf Invitational

May 2013

The Bear’s Club and Jack Nicklaus played host to the 11th annual Buoniconti Fund Celebrity Golf Invitational. The Buoniconti Fund is the fundraising arm for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and the event at The Bear’s Club has raised close to $6 million toward The Miami Project’s research into spinal-cord injuries. At this year’s pre-tournament dinner, Co-Founder Nick Buoniconti, the Hall-of-Fame linebacker and member of the Miami Dolphins’ undefeated 1972 team, announced the progress made in human clinical trials designed to take discoveries found to be successful in laboratory studies and fast track them to human studies with the approval of the FDA. The event also serves as a reunion of Hall-of-Fame athletes and sports celebrities, with as many as 20 on hand for the dinner and golf tournament. The event included such NFL greats as Nat Moore, Dick Anderson, and Hall-of-Famers Harry Carson and Thurman Thomas; NBA great Rick Barry and ESPN analyst and former Heat star Bruce Bowen; former All-Stars Mike Piazza and Jeff Conine of the Marlins; 1972 Olympic long jump record-holder Bob Beamon; and hockey legend Mike Eruzione, the captain from the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” US gold medal-winning team. This year’s event also welcomed actors Matthew Settle, the star of Gossip Girl and the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, and Aiden Turner, who starred for eight years on All My Children and most recently on Dancing with the Stars.
